Get Your Heating Ready for Thanksgiving in Winder, GA

Thanksgiving is three weeks out, and if you’re hosting this year, your house is about to work harder than it has all season. The oven runs for hours, the front door opens fifty times, somebody cranks the thermostat because Grandma’s cold, and three people take showers back to back. We see the fallout every year: the week of Thanksgiving is one of our busiest for no-heat calls across Winder, Braselton, and Dacula.

Most of those calls were preventable. Here’s how to make sure yours isn’t one of them.

Your heat hasn’t really been tested yet

We’ve had a few chilly mornings in Northeast Georgia, but most systems around here have only run in short stretches so far. A furnace can limp through a 50-degree night and still fail the first time it has to run hard for hours. Thanksgiving week is often when that first real workout happens, with a houseful of people watching.

If your system is more than a few years old and hasn’t had a professional once-over since last winter, book a heating tune-up now, while there’s still room on the schedule. We covered why November is the right month for it in last week’s post on furnace tune-ups, and the short version is simple: find the weak part in early November, not on a holiday.

A quick checklist before the guests arrive

A few things you can do yourself this weekend:

  • Swap the air filter. A full house kicks up more dust than usual, and a clogged filter is the single most common thing we find behind weak heat.
  • Run the heat for a solid hour and walk the house. Cold rooms, odd smells, or a system that keeps starting and stopping are worth a call now.
  • Test your carbon monoxide detectors. Gas furnace, gas oven, and a packed house is exactly when you want them working.
  • Check the water heater’s recovery. If the second shower already runs lukewarm with two of you, it won’t survive five overnight guests.
  • Clear the area around your furnace or air handler. Holiday storage bins have a way of migrating to the closet where the equipment lives.

None of that takes an hour, and it catches a surprising share of holiday breakdowns before they happen.

The thermostat fight, settled

Here’s one from the techs: when you’ve got twenty people and an oven going all afternoon, your house gains heat on its own. Set the thermostat a couple of degrees lower than usual before everyone shows up and let the crowd and the cooking close the gap. Your system cycles less, the kitchen stays bearable, and nobody has to hover over the thermostat playing referee.

If your downstairs roasts while the bedrooms stay cold, that’s usually a duct or airflow problem rather than a thermostat problem. It’s fixable, but it’s a before-the-holiday job, not a day-of one.

And if something breaks anyway

Equipment doesn’t check the calendar. If the heat quits while the turkey’s in the oven, we answer the phone — real 24/7 emergency service, Thanksgiving included. We’re based right here in Winder and we cover metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia, from Gwinnett out to Athens. Folks in Braselton and the neighborhoods off 124 in Dacula can find us on our Braselton service page.

We work on all the major brands, gas furnaces and heat pumps alike, and our trucks carry the parts behind most no-heat calls. You approve the price before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How close to Thanksgiving can I still get a tune-up?

Book now and you’re fine. The schedule tightens the week before the holiday, and the first hard cold snap can fill it overnight. If you call and we’re a few days out, that still beats finding a problem on the holiday itself.

Do you really run service calls on Thanksgiving Day?

We do. Our emergency line is answered by a person around the clock, every day of the year. There’s an after-hours dispatch fee, which we tell you upfront, and the repair is quoted before work begins so there are no surprises on the invoice.

My heat works fine. Is a tune-up still worth it?

That’s the best time to do it. A tune-up is about catching the worn igniter or weak capacitor before it fails, and about keeping the system running efficiently through the heating season. If you want it handled automatically every year, our USA Club Membership includes seasonal maintenance so it’s never something you have to remember.
