Don’t Ignore These Water Heater Issues

We’re in the dog days of summer and you’re possibly trying to make the most of it. The last thing you want to worry about before hosting visitors from out of town, throwing a big Labor Day barbecue, or leaving for vacation is having your water heater break down.

When your water heater is showing small signs that it’s having issues, the worst thing you can do is ignore the warning signs that something is wrong. We know it’s never convenient to schedule water heater service, but you don’t want a small problem to become a major issue. Here are some warning signs that you need to call us for water heater repair.

Low Water Pressure

A decrease in water pressure can be easy to catch if you’re used to a strong flow of water for your morning showers. If your water pressure seems to have decreased, this can be caused by mineral buildup in your water heater which is common in areas with hard water. This buildup can narrow the space that the hot water passes through.

Mineral scaling can happen quite quickly in areas with hard water. Not to worry as this is an easy fix for a professional plumber. We can flush the hot water system with a solution that dissolves the minerals, allowing water to flow freely and strongly again.

Discolored or Stinky Water

If the water coming from every tap is discolored or smells foul, it’s likely a water supply issue. However, if it’s just your hot water that’s a strange color or odor, then it’s probably being caused by the water heater.

There’s a component in every water heater called an anode rod. The purpose of an anode rod is to attract sediment and minerals to prevent corrosion. When the anode rod breaks, you might experience rusty or reddish-brown water discoloration or smell bacterial contamination.

Weird Noises

Gurgling, banging, popping, sizzling, or any other unusual sounds are strong signs that something’s amiss. Various sounds indicate issues such as a buildup of mineral scaling to a water flow problem or condensation issue. A plumber will be able to determine exactly what the cause is so that your water heater can get back to doing its job silently and effortlessly.

Signs of Leaking Anywhere

As you can imagine, letting leaks go untreated is a bad idea. Not only does it indicate that something is wrong with the water heater, but you could end up with major water damage on your hands. It’s far easier to fix a water heater—or even get a new one—than it is to fix a water-damaged home. Definitely call a plumber if you see any water leaking from your water heater.
