5 Ways to Help Your Heater Operate Efficiently

family-sitting-around-dinner-table

As temperatures decrease outdoors, the use of your heater is going to increase. If you have been careful to ensure that your system is well taken care of over the years, you shouldn’t have to worry about how much that system will cost you to operate. That said, there is nothing wrong with making sure you are doing everything possible to achieve peak energy efficiency this season

So, how can you get the best possible energy efficiency from your heater? We have some tips to help you with this.

1. Change out or clean your air filter

Your air filter is made to protect the internal components of your furnace from the problems caused by dirt build-up. Over time, however, your air filter can become extremely dirty and reduce the flow of air into your home. Avoid this by changing out or cleaning your air filter every one to three months.

2. Keep doors and windows closed

If you are running your heater you should absolutely keep your doors and windows closed. This can lead to your heater needing to run for longer amounts of time and using more energy to try to keep your home at the requested temperature. If there is a warmer day when you want to crack the windows and leave the heater odd, you absolutely can, but don’t run your heater while having those windows open.

We also advise checking your doors and windows for air leaks. Even when doors and windows are closed, air leaks can force your heater to work harder. Sealing those leaks makes a huge difference in the long run.

3. Keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature

We get the desire to drive up the temperature on your thermostat. However, we advise keeping the temperature setting at a reasonable number throughout the colder months of the year. The highest temperature that the Department of Energy advises is 68-degrees during the day, with a lower setting at night. This will help you enjoy a comfortable home without paying for an aggressively high energy bill.

4. Make sure all vents or air handlers are clean and clear

It is the season of decorating and moving furniture around to accommodate guests. That’s great! Just make sure to keep your vents and/or air handlers clear of anything that could block them and thereby hinder the flow of air into your home. Keeping these necessary exits clear can give your heater a huge helping hand and reduce the amount of energy it needs to use.

5. Schedule prompt maintenance and repairs

Last but certainly not least, make sure to keep up on maintenance and prompt furnace repair in Winder, GA. Maintenance can help optimize your system efficiency throughout the season and reduce its need for repairs throughout its lifespan. However, when repairs do pop up make sure to take care of them quickly by scheduling professional repairs with a team like ours.
